Upon visiting ten years later, he found that little had changed. The people were still overworked, underpaid, their hopes discouraged by the passage of time. Finding the one-room schoolhouse dilapidated, Du Bois laments the ominousness of progress: “My log schoolhouse was gone. ”1 At that time the industrial revolution was the promise of progress.

When the television returned to its original volume, I realized that she’d only turned it off to have her morning “quiet” time with the Lord. The ﬁrst Sunday I stood up in Shiloh Baptist Church in Weldon as a visitor was the Sunday I met Juanita Cleveland. I had only been in town for a couple of weeks, but when I met her I felt as though I had known her for years.
The railroad track on my left separated the north end of town from the south. I pondered the likely racial history of that divide, assuming that at least a portion of the history might still hold true today. As I left the township, headed for Roanoke Rapids, I again entered a vast expanse of trees and ﬁelds—much of it farmland or remnants of old 42 monday farm life: haystacks, a few animals, and dilapidated barns. The two-lane road was relatively straight, though dangerous for passing because of the constant entrance of log trucks.
