In Hayden Valley, two groups of visitors encountered the Nez Perce. One party, headed by the colorful Earl of Dunraven (for whom Dunraven Pass is named), escaped without incident. The other group was not so lucky: they lost one member when they were ambushed while camping at Otter Creek. Before they left the park, the Nez Perce killed a second man from this touring party. The leaders of the Nez Perce, particularly Looking Glass, Poker Joe, and Chief Joseph, were very concerned about not harming civilians, since their fight was with the military.
