In adults, CMR0 2 is maintained in acute isovolemic anemia (18), and in studies in which it can be calculated, E is not substantially changed (6, 18).

CONCLUSIONS Fetal lung development is under multi-hormonal control. These hormones interact with each other with synergistic or antagonistic effects. The overall rate of lung maturation may ultimately depend on the combined effect of these various hormones. Although hormones regulate the rate of lung maturation it is not clear that they initiate this process. This appears to be determined by factors within the lung tissue itself. Recent animal studies suggest that corticosteroids and thyroid hormones have additive effects on lung maturation both in vivo and in vitro.

As a consequence, the gut and nutritional function are now prime factors in intact survival for the high risk infant. The objective of a nutritional regimen for the high risk sick or premature neonate is to support life and a rate of growth sufficient to fulfill the individual's genetic potential. From the environmental point of view, Widdowson and McCance (62) discussed the important concept of 'critical epochs' in development 'when the size of the animal arising from its previous plane of nutrition determines its appetite thereafter and hence its rate of growth and dimensions at maturity.
