The loosely organized initiative grew out of a series of media activism campaigns, such as the Euro May Day demonstrations against precarious work and a network of fashion designers mobilized for an activist fashion hoax during the Milan fashion week in February 2005. In this hoax, a group of activists created a fake brand called Serpica Naro (an anagram of San Precario, the patron saint of precarious workers) and staged a protest on the catwalk in front of the international fashion press. The participants shared an interest in emerging ideas of open-source software, self-organization, and new models of collaboration.
The project is part of an ongoing investigation into how design can be used as a catalyst to initiate, facilitate, and support new kinds of conversations—conversations conducted at different scales, led by different and differing agendas, from the individual to the household to the neighborhood to the city and beyond. This particular “conversation space” was designed to reside in the district of Westlake, located in Los Angeles, California, and act as a hub for building community and support systems for emergency preparedness.
The project was also simultaneously an investigation of possible roles and contexts for the design contribution. As we are increasingly able to see the changing conditions the new century holds, we contend with this question: How is it that we want to support the human condition in the twenty-first century?
